Government and corporate
As a government or corporate employee you may be eligible to package the following benefits
Remote area housing benefit
If you live and work in a remote area you may be able to salary package your house purchase, mortgage interest, rent and residential utility costs.
Relocation expenses benefit
If you have had to relocate for work you may be able to salary package your relocation costs and living away from home expenses in addition to what you already salary package.
Package a vehicle and save even more
With a novated lease you use tax-free income to pay your vehicle finance and running costs - on top of any other salary packaging you’re doing!
Here are the vehicle expenses you can claim with a novated lease
The cost of joining an airline lounge – or even paying for temporary access to one – can be salary packaged in full.
If you’re an ongoing member of a professional organisation as a requirement of, or directly relating to, your current employment, you can salary package those membership costs (if you don’t already claim them as an income tax deduction).
Any taxi (or Uber) travel that begins or ends at your office can be salary packaged.
You can salary package course fees relating to your professional development (in your current role). It means you will enjoy the tax benefit in the short term rather than claiming them in your year-end tax return.
If you’re temporarily living away from your usual home to complete a short-term work assignment (up to one year), you may be able to claim the cost of temporary rental accommodation in the new location.
Novated leasing lets you access tax-free salary to pay for vehicle finance, fuel, rego, insurance, tyres and servicing. This is on top of any other salary packaging you might be doing.
If you’ve bought a mobile phone, tablet, laptop computer, digital camera, or headphones/earbuds and you use the device for work more than 50% of the time, you can salary packaging the entire cost.
You can salary package fees paid to a financial adviser for investment advice, or an accountant for managing your tax. It means you will enjoy the tax benefit in the short term rather than claiming them in your year-end tax return.
If you work in Public Health and/or the Charity sector you may be able to salary package the cost of renting holiday homes, cabins, hotel rooms – or even cruise ship cabins when you and/or your family go away on holiday. This opportunity links to your meal entertainment benefit and is counted towards your annual $2,650 limit.
To claim, simply fill out an Exempt Benefits Form and submit, along with copies of receipts or tax invoices clearly identifying your holiday accommodation costs.
If you’re looking to buy an e-bike for travelling to and from work then make sure you consider salary packaging. E-bikes can be leased to own from e-Stralian, and lease repayments can be salary packaged in full - which means big savings over the life of the bike.
